Fuel leak source?

Hi Folks. 69 88 petrol that I just bought. Had fuel leak from filler hose which I replaced. Put 20 litres of petrol in and it came pouring out underneath...but from where the tank is concealed. Car was restored 20 years ago..but I'm not sure if it was a new tank. Any other sources of the leak?or do I need a new fuel tank? Any info / thoughts appreciated!

Probably need a new tank. They are rust traps.

But first.

Don't trust anything about the restoration.

Remove the seat. Remove the lid on the seat box. Take a good look around the tank.

Especially when the bash plate cradles the inner tank at the front and at the back.

Get underneath and check around the bung.

Check the filler hose behind the seat, check to see if it's still in place, check the breather hose likewise.

Pour more petrol in. And see exactly where it's leaks.

That sounds just right for rusting through at the water trap caused by the double skin manufacture

Ok. Thanks for the information! Tank has a healthy amount of rust in it! Think I will replace. I've searched everywhere for tge leak.

Ours did that when you filled over half way. Found out when driving back when we bought it, brand new mot aswell.

Does the new tank go in from underneath?or do I need to remove the seat box / frame from above?

Suggest you invest in a high quality cavity wax and apply to the gap between the tank and the cradle, and apply liberally to all surfaces. I use Bilt hambler dynax S50. Other brands exist. NOT waxoyl.

Buy a new fixing kit as well, cheap and cuts out the faff of recovering the old fixings.
