Just doing the front swivel ball joints. Of course everything has to come off to get to these little so and so ball joints. Is it just me or are the abs sensors impossible to take out in one piece. it has to come out to take the cv/half shaft out. Anyway i found a great way to get these out. Buy the new multi tool the has the vibrating cutting blades. These go great between the swivel housing and the hub and cuts through the abs sensor at the bottom so you can pull out the hub. Then you can either cut the top off and hammer it out or hammer it out the other side once the swivel housing is off. The cheap £13 sensors off ebay work fine. I purchased the Neilsen ball joint remover kit fr £30 from ebay. You still need some 3/4 drive sockets to do the job plus whats in the box. The bottom ball joint is very close to the front lip of the yoke, so near impossible to get any support for a cup to push it out. I cut the lip off the old ball joint off with a 2mm cutting blade on an angle grinder. Be careful not to cut the yoke ! You will need a good long 1/2 drive ratchet to get the nuts off and 6 point sockets to avoid taking off the corners off your nuts.
Items i had to replace whilst doing job:
Replace one cv gaiter that was old.
2 abs sensors
2 front brake calipers as they looked like a titanic relic
Track rod arm due to one ball joint at the end damaged
new brake pads (green stuff as the wife says it doesnt brake like the X5)
oil seals on the axle ends
2x4 New bolts to the hub Be careful with these as they can be rounded
i box of rubber gloves and 1/2 kilo of Daz for clothes
those little 8mm head bolts that hold the brake dust plate. replaced with 10mm head bolts
if you get away with half of that then youve done well

Just done the same job. Before I reassembled the wheel bearing carrier I cut the dust cover, elongating the hole that the ABS sensor goes through, so the if it ever has to come off in the future then the sensor can stay on place. You were robbed by the way, I paid £9.99 each free p&p for my sensors. I paid more for my ball joint extractor kit but it had everything I needed.:)
