Hi Just finished doing my timing belt on my xedi Due to tensioner pully failing,
just thought i'd share a bit incase anyone else is thinking of doing this .
Breath deeply it's a frustrating more than difficult job.
Despite haynes etc saying that engine moutings or engine need to be removed ths is not nessecary ,it can be done with just moving a few pipes slightly out of the way, I live on a main road with no drive so limited to space but managed fine with wheels on ground no drive shafts or engine mountings needing touching.
Special tools not needed ,for locking pin 6.5 mm x 65 cm long bar will do ,i ground down an 8mm bolt to 6.5mm , tool for puling back tensioner is just 6mm threaded bar with nut on or 6mm bolt with nut on as all it does is screw in to piston then tighten up against back of housing to withdraw piston.
I undid aircon pipes from bracket to give a little more room ,remover undertray and wheelarch guard then to undo cover bolts 8mm socket ,for the ones where space is really limited I used socket in a pair of mole grips ,it's fiddly but not too bad. then removed vibration plate from cam pulley.
turn engine so timing marks line up ,then comes the worst bit .
After trying to locate the hole to put the pin for locking the engine (I tried lots of different ways including removing nearside driveshaft to access from below the car with no success, I found that the best way (or only way in my case) to locate it is to lie over engine from front of car (put blanket or similar over exhaust where it joins manifold or very scratched arms will occur :(
There is no way to see where the pin goes this is the frustrating bit ,it is just to the right of the centreline of the engine bay as you look at it from the front just below the pipes for the ird cooler ,there is a sensor not far from it so follow the wires to this and just below and a bit further back you should feel the hole ,it really is more luck than judgement that you find it but after the first time it's not too bad.
Then with the engine locked from underneath remove auxilliary belt pulley ,remove belt by putting spanner on bolt in idler pully and turning anti clockwise to release tension, with this removed lower cover can be removed.
The rest is fairly straightforward just using spanners as space too limited to use most sockets.
To remove Tensioner remove rubber bung in cover and put threadded bar through it screw in to back of tensioner then tighten nut against casing to pull back piston.
undo tensioner to remove.
As it is such a balls ache of a job then replace both this and the idler pulley at same time as belt they are not expensive so false economy not to.
To remove idler take off engine plate then large nut holding it.
It is mainly straightforward .
The only thing I couldn't do was torque up bolts to the required settings on re assembly as there is not enough room ,but my long extension on socket should mean they are at least as tight as recommended settings and none are pressure sensitive so this should not be a problem.
Time taken about 8 hours although it is the type of job that the second time you do it will be a doddle compared to the first.

well done, saved a few pennies not taking it to the garage....timing belts have always been a black art to me...lucky I have the TD4 with a chain :p
