When I switch off my Freelander TD4, particularly after a short run, a unit
runs on for a short while (1/1.5mins) before switching off. After a longer
journey it usually doesn't. I am sure this is quite normal _but_ I am
interested to know what it is.

Who knows?

Sounds like it may be an auxiliary heater - I think the Freebie is fitted
with a Webasto of some description that will do just that - doesn't after a
long run because the engine's up to temperature anyway.

I agree, my TD4 had the heater, the giveaway is exhaust emissions coming
from just in front of the front passenger wheel. If you have a look you will
see a silver pipe just protruding from below the valance.
