Freelander Tailgate handle repair

Just wanted to let people know about my repair to the rear handle of my Freelander 1ing one. . I knocked it and it fell off, looking at it the captive bolts that go through the tailgate had rusted and split out of the plastic in the handle, and the bolts themselves were beyond repair barring one. I managed to fix the undamaged one back into place using Araldite, and then fixed 2 m8 50mm machine screws the same way where the old bolts had been. Left half an hour to set and fixed the handle back on, sorted! Cheapest replacement I could find was £80. If anyone wants more details, let me know.

Did the same myself three times now.

I used a strong silicone instead of araldite for two reasons. First I don't have any, but had the silicone but also was concerned araldite might become brittle.
 
Your repair looks good, will have to see how the Araldite holds up, used it before on repairs and been impressed with it.

Hi. Was it the whole unit including the backing plate that came off? Mine only the handle / light holder piece broke away from the 3 threaded studs. I will try the araldite & try to drill through to fit longer bolt into the studs threaded holes.

The normal problem is a rust hole appears below the handle and the bolts also rust. Because the hole is kinda hidden the first you know about it is when the handle comes off in your hand. The photo's above are not clear but I pulled out what remained of the bolts and glued in new ones.
I'm not sure what you mean by "backing plate"
 
Ta Alibro, mine is same piece / handle as in you pics. the plate is the rectangular part it fixes onto & also mounts number plate. In mine, the studs broke out of where your machine screws are mounted and not possible to thread in anything now,, so,, I am going to use copious amounts of marine sikaflex to fill the end voids and where the studs have broken out and around the edge and cross webs and gaffer tape it on till it goes off,, as replacement here is AUS $400 + delivery.
