hi this is my 1st post on hear (hello) iv joined up to hopefully help my dad sort some issues with his td4 freelander it had a service the other wk and he was advised that the rear diff was leaking oil so as he knows i like to tinker with my cars (rover's and vw's) i said id have a butchers and sure enough rear diff is leaking not massively but enough to warrant action.

its leaking from what looks like the diff seals either side of the diff its only wet from these down top of the diff is bone dry (i got a face full of dry dust to prove this)

so iv been doing some Google searching and this place came up alot so i have joined up in the hope of saving my dad some funds and for my benefit tinkering with new things !!!!

threw searching iv discovered a few posts about diff removal ect and that diff seals are replaceable (can this be done with out removing diff ?)

ill try and up-load some pictures of the leaking areas just in case there is something else i have missed that you chaps might pick up on

cheers for any help / pointers as to ware i can get the parts i need

cheers brad

finally i have some pictures of the leaking rear diff:

on looking at the pictures again it seems that the rear diff front plate is it called that?? has a white sealant on it is this the color it should be ?? is there a gasket for this or is it just a instant gasket type of sealant thats used

sorry for all the questions but this is new to me and my dad

cheers brad

Hi brad and :welcome2: final drive/driveshaft oilseals both of mine have been done LR part no TOC100000 (PT)SEAL ASSY £ 26.18 plus vat each , went within a year of each other ! started to make a mess where i park, so got them done , nothing too drastick just keep checking the oil level via the filler plug (theres no drain plug !) HOPE THIS HELPS :)

gasket on plate is an RTV sealant, don't need to touch that,
driveshaft seals can be done without removing diff but you'll have to unbolt a couple things to allow each rear wheel to swing outta the way to pull driveshafts out

Excellent thanks chaps you both have said what we had thought was leaking so I'll get my dad to order a pair of shaft seals :)

Thanks chaps

when you do your seals its worth taking the diff breather off and blowing it through - a blocked breather may not be helping your situation as it can pressurise the diff casuing oil to come out of the seals.
In the mean time - top it up!!

Ok guys we are ordering seals this wk end and fitting them when we break up fir crimbo

A
Erm what oil should be put in the diff and we will clear out the breather at the same time
