Hi all,
Wonder if anybody can help me with his problem, after driving for approximately 20 minutes my freelander xedi starts shuddering & becomes undrivable.
I have checked all the usual uspects MAF, MAP, Throttle position control actuator etc. What I have noticed is that if I disconnect the coolant temperature sensor, which defaults to running both cooling fans 100% the engine runs very smooth with no juddering whatsover.
Yesterday I finally got my local landrover specialist "Newgate Motors, Navan Co. Meath, Ireland" to check the engine over, by the way there is a waiting list of 2 weeks for this garage services. The mechanic reported to me that he thinks the problem is with cabling in the wiring harness & in fact pointed out to me there was a hole in the alternator housing directly below the wiring harness. He suspects frayed cabling is the cause cost for the check over was 111 euros, he suggested that a new wirness harness would solve the problem but to fit a new harness would cost a substantial amount of money. He also suggeted that the cabling could be stiched if the frayed cabling can be found.
I was wondeing how come the engine runs smoothly with absolutely no juddering with the coolant temp sensor disconnected?
I'm assuming that when the car is juddering the ECU is interpreting some signal that its processing from a sensor to stop fueling but am not sure.
What would be involved in fitting a new wiring harness?
Could it be that when the engine reaches a certain temp say after 20 mins driving that the heat is causing a partially proken cable to disconnect & this doesn't happen when the coolant temp sensor is disconnected as the engine has full cooling alll the time?
Where might I source a new wiring harness for an L-Series engine?
If anybody can point me in the right direction in solving this mystery I would very much appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance

Eoin

If it were me I'd be checking the harness and connections to the pump as they commonly cause rough running issues. Clean with contact cleaner and strip back the loom if necessary checking for breakages. It's a bit of a faff but it costs nothing to investigate it yourself. Sometimes fiddling with the wiring with the engine running will have an effect.

Thanks guys for your advice & help, I'm still wondring why with the coolant temperature sensor disconnected the engine runs fine. This fault is so frustrating specially when I need the car for work I kinda don't want to carry out major surgerry just in case I'm left with no car least at the moment I have work around thats far from ideal.

Thanks again lads

I'll keep investigating

i'm sure i've read somewhere that the MAF or MAP connector is similar to the temperature sensor connector and they can be put back on the wrong one. might not have been for this engine but worth a try.
