freelander GS td4 auto diesel starting problem

Greetings Guys

I have an intermittant problem, it can be months between each occurance.
Stop for a while get back in turn key, engine turns over but not fire up, leave alone for 20-30 minutes turn key and it fires up, every thing fine untill the next time, very annoying and frustrating.
Does anyone out there have any ideas of the problem hence the cure.

when it does not start, turn on ignition and listen for gurgling sounds(passenger side) or from lift pump under bonnet on passenger side wing. if it is there then in tank fuel pump is on way out. worth a try.
