Freelander - Cuts when going into 2nd gear

Hi I have a 1997 freelander es 1.8 just had full gasket replaced including all bolts, distributor, cam belt, timing belt/pully. But still I have a problem with starting and when gearing down into 2nd gear at junctions its cuts out and struggles to start again, anyone have any ideas of what it could be? any ideas would be appreciated thanks.
