Freelander 1 TD4. What mileage before problems?

Am looking for a mid sized 4x4, predominantly to tow caravan with so I don't get stuck on grass pitches. Have had Discos, Rangies and Series models but Freelander is more size I am looking at. Ideally a TD4 post 03 facelift model, looking to spend max of 6k.

I know the Freelander 1 TD4 is not without its problems, but at what sort of mileages can I expect the more serious problems to occur with transmissions etc? Am looking for one with lower mileage and certainly not anything with more than about 55k on the clock.

What are typical problems on TD4 and at what sort of mileages do they tend to occur?

Thats optimistic, 3 1/2

Unless of course it is raining heavily, then your doors may fall off without actually driving anywhere

If they can be driven off the production line under their own steam they're doing well!

That's why I like V8 petrols. The money you spend not fixing them easily pays for the extra fuel they use!

OK the Freelander has significant problems then??

Don't want another Discovery, as stupid split roof design meant it was too high for many height barriers, making them a complete pain.

Is the Defender any good then? Know they fetch good prices, but are they actually worth it?

Unless someone comes up with a good reason for buying another Landie, it looks like my next 4x4 will be something Jap or Korean. Can't keep producing crud and expect loyalty ad infinitum, as it the poor owner having to pay for poorly made and/or designed products.

I've had a Discovery 300Tdi for 6 years, do about 12/15k per year, it's now done 180k and still drives like new and I tow a caravan with it about 2k per year.

Well, if the Discovery won't go under a barrier then the Defender isn't likely to either. You just have to drive around a little longer looking for a place to park than some other people. It's no great hardship, surely?

I had a 300 tdi, great engine and reasonable economy. Sadly that was let down by endless oil drips and indifference from the technical support at Land Rover. Local garage got so p*ssed at their attitude they fabricated and fitted full length drip trays under the engine and gearbox, they lined with flame redardant matting. Then we had the curling up dashboard top (common problem), dodgy passenger door locking (another common problem). Poor application of sealant by rear windows (leaked in). To give it its due though, the chassis was rot free.

Whilst the height clearance between the Disco and the Defender doesn't seem that big, it often makes the difference between getting under barriers (or not). It only a problem is strange towns admittedly.
