Hi All, need some advice. Wife pulled into a petrol station, fuelled up and tried to pull away and there was, apparently an almighty noise from underneath the car. I got there, had a look and saw there was a large ring of metal hanging around the prop shaft ( i believe this is a part of the vibration damper). She did say it was making a noise on the way and there has been a creaking coming from the back for some time which I thought were the diff mounts which do need replacing. I tried moving it from the forecourt and it felt like something was restraining the car, then with a clunk and a bang and would free itself for a little while then repeat. In the end the RAC took the Freeloader and me back home. Reading on the foums about the VC test I had a go and the wheel would turn a small amount with a large screwdriver stuffed into the UJ and hefty amount of force from my foot. Not convince VC was ok, I removed it with the propshafts to make it into 2wd as I read on these forums. Tried to reverse out the drive and still got this retardation and clunking. My thoughts now turn to the IRD or Diff - Any thoughts on how to test either - could it be something else ? I have a strange prenomition about empty banks account and loaded credit cards are on the way!!

Cheers :(

try this

jack the car up on one side and turn the ird input shaft by hand, if it feels lumpy its had it

thats the way i look at them
good luck

Jacked up the side, turned the ird shaft and it turns........right up until it stops  . I can give the wheel a turn and it'll turn some more but there's a point, around where it locks where there's some slack (almost feels like there's some teeth missing !) The locking is more pronounce in one direction than the other.
I'm getting a strong feeling it's fooked.
