Has anyone done it without major modification to the car?

I have a nudge bar and considered bolting it to that then attaching the numberplate to the front of the winch but not sure if the nudge bar would be strong enough to cope with the winching? Or would it pull the bar off and leave me sitting in the mud?

I was just thinking about how to rescue myself if I got stuck off road while on my own. Perhaps I should just buy a CB radio and cry for help instead!!

Why are you thinking about going off road on your own where there is a risk of needing recovery or having to winch yourself out!?

Did that once. Went through a watersplash I'd been through many many times. Got stuck on the centre rut with all wheels spinning at least 8" off the bottom. Tried every trick in the book but no hope. Even If I'd had a winch I'd have needed a ground anchor as nothing to tie too. I walked up the top of the hill a good half mile away to get phone reception but my mate with a 4x4 was out of town. That's when I saw a 4x4 pickup coming a long the track. I ran back and he eventually towed me out, also wondering how the heck I'd got stuck as even he'd been through it many times. We could only imagine some big tractors or something must have eroded the ruts. No normal car could. Anyway, lesson learned- don't even assume your regular tracks are ok, especially on Christmas Day! ;)
