I am fitting a new clutch cylinder in my sons 1.8 freelander do you have any tips on how to get the piston in the right place before I fit the "c" clip on? Some how I managed to make a right mess of the last one thanks

When it looks completely wrong then it's in properly.
I used cable ties to hold mine in last time I did it. Make sure the clutch release arm is well lubricated too as they get very sticky and trash the bracket and master/slave.

Thank you Alibro do you have any pics? the story so far tonight I had to tow my son back the piston had popped out of the bracket and the piston had come out looks like it has let air in the system so looks like he needs another one . some one has told him you should be able to move the clutch release arm by hand is this true? I have sprayed gt85 and smeared oil over the arm so I hope that will help ? The "c" clip does that go to the front or the back of the bracket ? We managed to get the car back by putting it in gear with the engine off and starting off in second , got home fitted it all together but the clutch peddle is very soft and dose not come back to the top properly .It will go in gear with the engine off but not with the engine running any ideas lads this is becoming expensive

Sorry mate, no photos and sold the car ages ago and I can't remember how the c clip fits but I do remember it seemed very likely to fall off hence the cable ties.
It might be worth contacting a local scrappy to see if you can get a used master/slave. From what I've heard the aftermarket ones are poor.
I don't think you can move the release arm by hand so a suitable piece of pipe might help.

thanks bud well its being towed to the garage over the weekend so it may end up with a new clutch as well

A quick update on this the car didn't need a cylinder head gasket the manifold rubbers were leaking so that's good , the reason the master slave cylinder broke (twice) was because the bracket that it fits in to was not a very good fit . This has now been sorted and for now at least all is well ,I did read on here some were "buy cheap buy twice" never a truer word as we have found out to our cost
