Disco 2 V8 2001.
Spent this morning underneath cleaning and trying to trace the sudden oil leak that appeared last week. Never left a drop on the drive up till then. Seems to be coming from back of engine on left hand side as you face the front of the car. Underneath you can see it coming down from the top and dripping off the bottom of the sump. Would a problem with the rocker cover gaskets cause this ? Are there any other seals to consider ?

Thinking of taking it to these people for investigation and repair.

Any one ever used them and can tell me how they faired ?

Once it's stood after a run, the dripping continues then stops . Restarts after engine has been running then stops .

Will do. Had my head in the engine bay with a torch but with so many pipes and wires ( and I have LPG ) it very hard to see anything. Its been a great runner up till this . I have always been proud of the fact that out of my many Rangies , classic and P38 plus various Disco's , they have all been DRY !

I always thought that if there was no oil under it then there was no oil in it? you have been lucky, I park my Disco 1 V8 on the wood chippings along the side of the house so that I dont notice it. Sorry I could not be of any help.

My LPG gas specialist started to remove his fittings today with a view to lifting off the bannana shaped plenium chamber and taking the rocker covers off to check the gaskets. Surprise.....you also have to disconnect and bleed the air con because a pipe is in the way of one and you have to empty out the engine coolant because the water pipes are in the way of the other. The EGR's also had to come off one side.

Add to that you have to un couple the pipe with the fluid in for the ACE system. Two gaskets- £11.00. Labour ( and regass) at £40 an hour...well its getting close to the £700 mark. Still don't know if it has done the trick.

When I fitted a gas conversion to mine recently. I had the 'banana shaped' plenum chamber off to fit the gas injectors. Didn't have to empty the A/C, just unbolted the compressor from its mount and pulled it and it pipes outta the way. Also only coolant pipes I had to move were the supply and return to the heater. Like you say, loads of vacuum pipes and cables, but nuthin technical. All that said, I didn't need to remove the rocker covers, so dunno wether that gets more complicated! The EGRs can be left in place, but you have to remove the mounting studs with the old 'double nut' trick.

On the passenger side, the rocker cover couldn't be manoeuvred out with out undoing the ACE pump pipe and the Air con pipes near the front. On the drivers side, a coolant pipe and the gas system meant more undoing in order to lift away rocker cover . If you ever have a similar leak, sell it or torch it straight away.
