Im 16 and thinking about saving up for a first car, i would really like a defender 90 but im wondering 1) do they make good first cars and 2) cost for a 19 yr old to insure?

I dont think you could do much better than a defender for a first car far more fun than any car to start and tough if you happen to have a crash which at 19 you might well do. I am 21 and i just payed 400 quid for a 300 tdi if this helps
 
£400 to insure? Not bad at all! And if i prang it it just adds to the charm of the landy

How long id wait till i could afford to insure it, athough from what ive now heard its not such a good first car
 
I've passed my test 4 months ago after buying a 90 2 years previous, overall I feel it makes a fairly good first car although its more like driving a tractor than your instructors hatchback. Insureance is also pretty low from my own experience too provided you arn't the main driver.

Although as I'm hopefully going to uni in september not gaining any no-claims isn't really an issue for me. After trying loads of comparison sites which are at least a grand, I found the NFU to be the cheapest at a substantially lower price, If your interested in getting a landy its always worth a phone call to get an approximate quote.

difficult first car, but will soon have u drivin with confidence. if ya can drive a defender, no other car will EVER b a problem, insurance, b a named driver on ur folks insurance policy, ya wont build up a no claims bonsu but do ti for a couple years. ya got plenty of years ahead of ya to build ur ncb.

I dont know about adrian flux but im 18 and insurance with the nfu was not a problem, although you dont earn any no claims bonus not being the main driver, insurance is substantially cheaper, but I have heard that it varies therefore when gatering quites its always best to explore both avenues.

yeah theres the difference, I'm not trying to be a named driver on an old farts policy, the policy is for myself. 20 years old, noclaims in use on other vehicle, 3.5ltr v8 RRC vogue, Adrian flux and NFU both said No sir, not today, wait til you're older. this was last week.

It's different, but I would say to anybody thinking about one try it furst, heavy on fuel, not very nice to drive, uncomfortable, and most girls will run a fokin mile.

And it needs repaired all the time.

I dont think that they are every day cars, great for what they can do but day to day, dont think I could live with it going to work, and so on.

An aquired taste!!

I only use my disco for off road, it's a tank and drinks fuel.
 
Got Mine At 18, No No Claims, On My Own Insurance, With Lancaster Insurance, Cost Me 1400 (Third Party Fire Theft) And Woulda Been 1800 Fully Comp. That Was Along With Writing A Car Off 2 Months Previous On A Different Insurer. So Their Pretty Damn Cheap To Insure Really.

Part timer.... :D And vengeful elephant, i have no no claims, but its the 2.5 diesel not 3.5 V8. I asked about that too and they weren't quite so happy about it.
 
Getting Insured For A V8 Would Have Been Cheaper For Me Than Getting A Doozle. Just Need To Look In The Right Places Really, And A Landrover (Blive It Or Not) Is Cheeper Than A 1.1 Polo To Insure
