Hi guys Just bought some of that "Air con in a can" from Halfords and it seems simple enough to use. Thing is, on the gauge it starts at 0 (in the green area) and stays there, moves up slightly when there's pressure but sinks back down to 0. So I need to check if there are signs of leaks, I gather the first thing is to check the compressor...an ideas how I do this? The car is a TDI 300 (1998) manual.

Cheers
Al

Looking at the cost of DIY products it might be worth while getting a professional to have a look at it . Try one of the mobile people or some place that has all the gear to do it.Part of the refill process is to do a leak test first . Should cost approx £100 or less all in depending on any faults found. Regards Jonathan

Best to get a proper job done by a guy who has got the right gear. I had mine done by a mobile guy and he was crap. All he had was the same gear you bought. Regassed my system in 5 mins, sprayed some foam into air vent to stop bacteria, charged me a mint and left. Had a proper job done last week by a guy who knew what he was doing. Here is what he did and it worked. Took the tempreture at the air vent before he started, tested the pressure in the system (he knew what the pressure should be) then removed the old gas, vacumed the system to remove moisture, leak tested it, put oil in the system for the compressor and a UV dye to detect future leaks, checked the filter and put the correct weight of gas back in. The whole job took 1and a half hours and it works fine. Cost 50 quid. Hope that helps. Paul.

What about KWIK FIT. I was over in UK a few months ago and remember a billboard saying they will sort your air con out or you get your money back. The eqipment needed aint rocket science, and having watched the guy do mine I reckon I could do it if I had the gear.

Kwik Fit weren't very good with mine, didn't seem to know how to operate the equipment properly, insisted I had a leak, didn't try to empty the old gas first but still took my money! Got refund and took to specialist who was mobile but good, took a while and did proper job with dye and lube etc. (There was no leak, he pressure tested it for quite a long time and showed me the system holding pressure)

The problem with this stuff is the equipment. I have most of the stuff here, and it aint cheap! The manifolds and hoses can set you back a fair amount. The vacuum pump alone is upward of 200 quid.

If the system does have a leak, then charging it with the anti leak stuff will seal all the contaminated gas in there. If any air (not refrigerant) is in the air con, then it can seriously bugger it

i will work out cheaper in the long run to get it done with ther proper machine. luckily i can do mine for free at work but you should be lloking to pay around £50-£60 for full test and regas
