Hi all,
I've recently bought a W reg 1.8 Freelander. I think I've bought a car of trouble though:( The bloke I purchased it from claimed he had done a load of work to it but I never got to see any receipts. I have a couple of issues.

1) The speedo doesn't work but he supplied me with a transducer but I am not sure where to change it. I've looked in the engine bay but I can't see the switch.
Can anyone post a picture of where I should be looking.

2) When I full lock to turn the car makes a grinding noise as if the wheels are rubbing but they are not. Is this a bearing issue or something more sinister?

3) When I drive and if the car jolts there is a rattling sound, I've had a look underneath and the exhaust is very close to another pipe (near to the rear bumper end)so I think this is what's causing the rattle. Does that sound about right?

I actually love the car and don't mind spending money to get it up to scratch but just looking for some pointers in the right direction.

PS - Ive put Freelander 2 but I could be wrong, I am assuming The Freelander 1 is the old farm style.

Thanks all:)

I hate to say this, but you haven't bought a lemon, you've gone and got the whole meringue :( To start with, it sounds very much like you need to replace your IRD and VCU, as well as the bearings. The transducer for the speedo goes into the gearbox, not the engine. The "pipe" that your exhaust seems to be banging on is probably the rear propshaft. If you have contact between the propshaft and exhaust, then this could point to several problems, ranging from a cheap exhasut bracket, to a very expensive rear subframe problem. My advice would be to take the Freelander to an independant Land Rover specialist, and get them to take a look. Hopefully they should also have a look at the cooling system and HG, because that is also a very common problem with the 1.8

Oh, btw, its a Freelander 1 you have. ;)

Thanks for your reply, I kinda had a feeling I'd bought a problem. Oh well I guess I'll let a mechanic friend of the family have a look and see what he will charge me to sort it out. I think I might need to be sitting when he quotes me though:)

That'll teach me for not being more thorough I guess. Thanks for your help.

Doesn't sound that bad, how much knowledge do you have regarding mechanical work. Why don't you do some of the work yourself save a fortune, for example remove the prop-vcu ect. then see if there is still the sound do some eliminating before you go to the garage. take another look at the exhaust look at the rubber supports does any look as though they are being stretched ect if so then the exhaust may have been put on wrong.

Thanks for your reply, I'm not very mechanically minded but not afraid to have a look and tackle something armed with a bit of knowledge as to what I need to do. Give me a laptop, mobile phone or anything teccy and I'll take it apart and put it together in a jiffy but cars are a bit different:) It's a bit like learning Chinese and living in Japan:) Still I will have a look when I'm not working and when my missus allows me some respite from all the jobs in our new house. I suspect knowing my luck i have bought a real lemon but i can hope that maybe it just might be something reasonably non catastrophic:)
Thanks again for the replies.
