the plague ?

They will have been well looked after, but are likely to
be high milage. Not a problem for Tdi's, but you'd need to
be careful with a V8. Check the gearbox for signs of
clunking.

In my opinion, of course ;-)

Mate bought one with about 170k on the clock (200Tdi) it's now got about
280k on and still going as strongly as ever. Rear wheel inner wings, mudflap
brackets, rear loadspace floor and stuff like that have needed replacing,
but other than that it's been extremely reliable. He reckons it's 'cos
they're used a lot in adverse conditions so if you're buying one, have a
good check for rust in brackets and 'the usual' places, like those mentioned
... ;)

Most Police Forces take great care with their vehicles, and service them
over and above 'normal' service levels.

In my view a good buy - the police cant afford to have vehicles off the
road, so they are checked over daily and any problems dealt with
straightaway.

plus, it will have been serviced regularly

only downside, high mileage - but does that matter if its been serviced
properly - IMHO it doesnt - I have the same view on company cars - if
they've been serviced properly the mileage isnt an issue

Hmmm. Remember that quite often, police vehicles will have been started
from cold and immediately run up to high speeds for long periods of
time. Although they will have been driven well, that doesn't
necessarily mean it will have been gently. I don't doubt the servicing
is good, but flat-out running, particularly from cold (remember the
Disco isn't exactly a high-powered beast) isn't a great way to run an
engine IMHO...

Tis is the reason why our highway police used to destroy one or two
engines per year, after not too high mileage. AFAIR it had been BMW M5
cars.

I think that under this treatment an engine will let go pretty quickly in
it's life. I'd suggest that anything above 100k will be a pretty strong
engine.

ICBW though ... ;)

I assume the discoveries are (mostly) used by traffic so are run 24 hours a day
this means they are hot at the start of shift not many cold starts
Probably driven hard but serviced to very high standards

I've a view from both sides of the fence.

For the quick off the mark jobs the Disco is the last usually to go off the
bank. Bear in ming the others such as Mundanos, Omega, Volvo T5, Volvo XC's
BWM's and Jaguars amoungst many others on Traffic / Immediate response
units.

Then theres the Rural outpost Discos and 110's which generally are well
looked after by the staff who consider them a great perk to the outpost post
iyswim. Washed off most days if not shifts and due to the slower traits of
ruaral life lots less likely to be needed to scream around the lanes than
there Response unit counterparts.

They all probably get less of a hard thrape from cold than common garden
Discos. Envisage the late start into rush hour motorway traffic for Civvy
Discos.

The mere fact it's ex police will mean it will command a much lower price so
purchase wise you get alot more for your money..... usually about 10 holes
in the roof and a dashboard riddled with abscent switches.

Dad had an Ex police Rangie. Main problems were electrical related after the
mirriad of gadgets had been unlovingly removed such as motorway floodlights
etc etc. Other than that and the usuall engine hickups it was a good motor.

Lee is right, it is quite important to know what it's been used for.

We have a 02 plate Disco which is in use pretty much 24 hours. It is fully
laden with equipment to the point where it doesn't sit quite right. It's
got holes drilled everywhere and the seats are worn. It has the worst ride
of any Disco I've been in, and it's been RTC-ed three times (IIRC twice with
deer).

It's serviced at an LR dealer and all the electrical tinkering is done in
house.

Cheers

The last one I had some years ago was an ex Met 3.9 Auto which had been fitted
with a new engine not long before its release and a new transmission a year or
so before that. The vehicle went like the proverbial off a shovel and had extra
goodies like twin batteries & split charge amongst numerous other things.

You can pick up good ones but there are some real dogs about. Beware holes in
the dash / interior and chopped about wiring looms. Also check that any holes
in the roof have been sealed properly and that steering and suspension bushes
are not knackered. You might also find driver and passenger door hinges and
locks worn and damaged painwork due to poorly removed reflective tape.
