Well straight to the point, him's got a 110,109,Disco Td5 and have just bought the Misses a 2001 Diesel Freelander! (picking it up on Friday) it was cheap, has a few bumps, one of the rear windows dunt work (stuck half way up/down) and the sunroof has problems closeing! Done about 180k.It has past bills for nearly £5k (that I have not studied yet)

Questions?

Now all tell me what a fantastic vehicle this is,they never break down and how happy the wifes going to be:)

Cheers

Any Freelander experts out there then that can fill me in?

Good engine? Bad engine? EGR to be binned? any other mods? de-cat?

What's this I've heard about dipstick oil level??? special way to do it or summet:confused:???

If it's a Td4 then it's a BMW diesel. Good engine, yes but a few things you need to do. The oil level should read consistantly ok, but if the crankcase breather filter/valve assy is blocked then the crankcase becomes pressurised & forces the oil past all the seals, the dipstick & more crucially past the turbo seals causing early turbo failure (symptoms also include poor performance & black smoke). This must be replaced at least every 12-15,000 miles. Replacing the egr valve with a bypass is a good thing. Also check your MAF, very common failure point (poor performance below 2-2500rpm). Injectors can & do fail (rough running/poor starting)& are pricey - leak test will confirm if you have any suspicions. Cam sensors fail regularly (poor/no hot starting) & crank sensors fail (no/intermittent starting) on some cars. Intercooler pipes split easily giving lots of black smoke, & poor performance. Turbo vane vacuum solenoid can fail causing poor top end performance. The fuel filter should be replaced every year or two at the longest, not the 5 year/60k miles on the service schedule. The primary fuel lift pump is weak & can fail resulting in no starting. These engines only like fully synthetic oil changed regularly according to the service schedule & regular use of a good quality injector cleaner (my preference is Millers Powersport 4 at double the recommended dose.) Oil coolers can fail causing oil & coolant to mix but this isn't too widespread.
Even with your miles, if your engine has been looked after it will continue to give good enjoyable service for many years to come.

ps once youve got it running well & are hapy with it you could look into a Roverron tuning box - well worth the money for a worthwhile boost in performance.
