engine over revs 300tdi auto

just started today, while driving along at 55mph, the engine kicked down and the revs came up and stayed up, for example sitting at 60mph, 3000rpm on a flat road. pulled in and stopped the engine, restarted and drove off several miles later it happened again. stopped again and drove off it hasn't happened again.........................any ideas???????

First thing to do is check the oil level in the auto box. I believe this has to be done warm, with the engine running.

Yep, happened in an old auto of mine, just lost all drive. Turned out the garage who had just serviced it mistook the engine oil plug for the transmission oil. Someone drained the transmission oil, plugged it up and then another guy came along and checked the engine oil and thought that the other guy had done his job for him!

just an up date/revised description off the problem
while driving along, it appears the transmission kicks down to the next gear and will not come back to the normal RPM???????????????? once i pull in and switch the engine off, restart and continue the problem goes away for quite a few miles then it does it again sometimes. i have check the transmission oil levels etc and they are good, can any one shed any light on this and a possible solution.....................many thanks becks bear
