Engine oil to use

Hi

I've heard conflicting views on the oil to use. I'll go for the 15W40, but somebody said that sticky oil (like Castrol Magnatec) is no good, but somebody else recommended it.
Also what type would be best: mineral, fully synthetic or part synthetic etc?

its an old land rover its not fussy.
go buy cheapo asda oil, just change it regular

I made the mistake of putting expensive super-duper turbo diesel specific oil in my old engine - huge mistake! The detergents in it cleaned all the gunk out that had been maintaining compression in my engine, so that it lost power and smoked like a busterd.

I've got a 200tdi now - cheapo mineral oil does the job, it's just gonna get changed regularly.

universal tractor oil works a treat and it's cheaper so you can change it more often.
