  'Scuse me for being thick, but can anyone clarify? for a 2001 DiscoTd5

On checking 'the manual' its says 5w/30 & 5w/40 are the best oils.

On visiting the "weekend mechanics heaven" Halfords website - it puts 5w/30 down as being a petrol engine oil, not diesel and the best for diesel is the 5w/40.

I've seen elsewhere in this forum someone saying 5w/30 is what Land Rover recommend, therefore does it matter they class it for petrol engines NOT diesel (or is it all part of a cunning plan that Halfords don't know about:eek:  :) )

fron the disco owners handbook

"Engine oil - Diesel engines Use a 5W/30, 5W/40, 5W/50 or 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA: A1 and B1, and having a viscosity band recommended for the temperature range of your locality."

as you can see from the table below the spec depends on the condition in which you will be driving

I have just been given 8L of Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10w/40 (sells at £25 for 4L at Halfrauds) by a mate who bought it a couple of months ago thinking it was petrol oil & he'd lost the receipt so he asked me if i wanted it for a tenner - I wouldn't have bought it at the full price but £50's worth of oil for a tenner - absolute bargain.:) - going to do an oil change tommorrow.

there have been lots of threads on here about 'what's the best oil for my engine' - some from so called 'experts' -lots of people have different opinions -some say 15w/40, some 10w/40 etc.

I suspect this is one for Charlesy;)

It doesn't matter a damn!

My 2004 TD5 Disco gets Ovoline Tractor Universal Oil about every 5 to 8 ,000 miles, and a clean filter every time.

TUOil is slightly heavier grade but that doesn't matter unless I go the North Pole, which I don't have on my agenda.

It cost me EIGHTY PENCE A LITRE .................. !

I buy 210 litre drums of the stuff.
