For as long as I can remember I've wanted a landie, but somehow I never got around to it. Something about having a wife and kids made a Series 1 with a nicely battered canvas roof seem like an expensive toy!

Well, fortune smiled on me this week when I was told my new company car (unfortunately not a landie) will take 4 months to arrive, leaving me car-less for the interim. The kind of news that comes once in a lifetime and was followed by a conversation similar to the one below:

Me: "Well, I -need- a car for work, but there's no point buying an expensive new one for just a few months..."

Wife: "You want a landrover, don't you"

Me (grinning like a 3 year old being asked if he likes icecream): "Erm..."

Wife: "Well, if you do get one, we can take the dog and the kids for a run in the woods without worrying about it getting dirty."

Utterly stunned by the unexpected response I didn't even wait to ask further questions and jumped straight on ebay!

2 days later I find myself the proud owner of a '95/96 Discovery (2.5 tdi ES) and I'm in love! I went for the disco because it's 'family friendly', but still has the heart and soul which is lacking in so many modern tin cans.

Still trying to figure out what all the buttons do (no manual) and worrying about changing the cam belt (last owner has no idea when it was last done and she's pushing 155k) but that aside, I'm thoroughly loving the slightly wobbly ride, the tractor-like rumble of the engine and slowly identifying all of the clicks, farts and squeaks she makes as she trundles proudly through the traffic.

And so I find myself here, a forum packed with tons of useful info where I've already learned how to use the diff lock lever (didn't dare touch it without checking 1st, which reminds me, what does the 'Sel' button do?)!

So, hello and thanks for sharing the wealth of knowledge.
