Hi,

Does anyone have an Auto EDC which starts quickly, if so can you do a you tube of it 1st start on a cold morning so we can all drool over it working.

Oh and also know what to aim for

Pretty sure im gonna look stupid here but how do I know if mine is an edc or not?! Its a 1998 Auto which I think probably should be...? and for what its worth starts absolutely instantly as soon as I turn the key after plugs light has gone out once.

Hi,

Just look at the tube from the air filter box, if there an aluminum box bolted down with three bolts and some wired its EDC.

Look at the image here,

The reason for asking about one which does start I know the older non EDC's in good nick just ping into life and I think we need a fault finding guide for the EDC because loads of us are asking the same question and it would be good to work something out.

Mine runs really well but is a bugger to start on cold days, or colder days.

I think we have a load of normal stuff that applied to both non and EDC versions like glow plugs lift pumps, glow plugs three times etc which may work, but I think there must be some stuff, like water air temp, air flow etc which we can check.

I want to find out how to get the EDC ones working well, mainly because I have one and starting is the only thing that bugs me with it. Mine starts every time but turns over for 5-15 seconds to do it, this is going to bugger up the battery at some time.

Just picked this out of the land rover workshop manual;

"Under start up conditions, signals from the crank speed and water temperature sensors are relayed to the ECM to control starting fuel quantity and injection timing. Once the engine has started the ECM initiates a ’closed loop’ monitoring system for fuel quantity, injector timing and EGR relative to the appropriate engine operating conditions."

So if the normal manual stuff is ok, it might be the engine crank speed and water temperature sensor, now oddly my cruise control packed up and the crank speed sensor is used for that as well and it can be tested on the move with a multimeter, the water temperature again can be tested and if I can find the wired to the EDC I could test that circuit as well. Got to love Land Rovers.

Well I have a video, just need to work out how to upload it. Mine starts almost instantly with a slight cough for a few rpm's then goes smooth. I think this is because the injectors are in desperate need of being re-shimmed and new nozzles fitted. (they have a tendency to spit on 1st start up when cold because the fuel is cold/thicker and older nozzles cant deal with this as well as new ones)

Mine starts instantly if you let the glow plugs cycle.
75k on the clock.

If I ignore the glowplug cycle then it will start, but it'll turn over for a few seconds first.

Mine doesn't lol although its a damn site better than it was. I have learn't a trick for starting mine. Undo the fuel cap and then try the result then is she fires up instantly. Think I must have a blocked breather

Just had another idea that could help a lot of us. What about trying to arrange a get together for EDC Discovery owners. With a load of us working together in person rather than over the internet we could probably sort a few out so that they start properly. Go on who else is in Wales?

The EDC system is almost identical in every way to the system used on early vw pre-pd tdi's.

There is so much info out there about the vw system, its such a basic but easy system to learn to use, the only let down is the rather basic ecu.

This is why I am investigating using the vw ecu as it has alot more oppotunity for easy diagnostic and adaption/tuning.

I really do think that with a good recon set of injectors, a better ecu map, bigger intercooler and either a better turbo or improve on the one thats fitted, the 300 tdi can run a reliable 150bhp with bags of torque and much better mpg.

Worn injector nozzles make a tdi a nightmare to start from cold.

Thanks SpaceDawg, very helpful mate - mine is indeed an EDC one then - and starts perfectly - and its done over 170k btw if relevant.

I have very little mechanical knowledge as I have probably just proved lol but would be more than happy to bring a reliable starting edc to a meet up if it helps others figure out whats wrong with theirs. Im in Norfolk though so Wales might be a bit of a stretch at the mo, especially bearing in mind the next paragraph!

Will keep an eye on this thread anyway as anything to improve the mpg of mine would be brilliant as thats one area where its not too great :D

Will now also go read through that other edc thread now I know its applicable!!

.......... the water temperature again can be tested and if I can find the wired to the EDC I could test that circuit as well. Got to love Land Rovers.

I think pins 13 and 53 on the EDC ECU are the temp sensor. I'm sure there's a post on here somewhere with the range of resistances, I'll have a search as I think I saved a copy.

Mine fires into life pretty much instantly in the milder weather, but at 4am in the morning when it's icy and I'm off to work it turns over fairly slowly for a couple of seconds then starts. Saying that I'm assuming it's the battery as it's a halfords 072 and looks pretty old, so am going try changing that to a one with a higher CCA, and maybe stick another earth strap on it before investigating further :)

Well I think, and I mean think and I'm trying to get it confirmed, that I may have found a diag system for a Disco 1 for about £20, its based on and ELM chipset, if this is the case I should be able to read any fault codes.
