I decided to buy logs today while they are still cheap and cut my reliance on gas heating over the winter.

Filled the back of my 88' with as many sacks of logs would go in... then filled up my 3x4" trailer.

Normally.. I am very happy with the standard brakes but carrying a load of logs made them more 'interesting'... almost dropped a log of my own when lights at the bottom of a hill turned red !!

Can anyone recommend a cheap and easy upgrade to the Series 3 for more effective braking power ???

Cheers

an anchor and a short rope...................sorry mate but i am in the same boat:D

i've found the best method for stopping a overloaded series is if you start braking before you set off you might just stop where you want.....

if you have a brake servo and 11inch drums all round then you cant really easily do much other than keep them in good condition an keep oil out of the drums!

trees are good for the old emergency stopping though.....:D

can't help wondering what your rig looks like,an 88foot lanny and a 3X4 inch trailer..................lol

I've got 11" drums on the front & standard'uns on the rear, the balance between them seems to be about right. Like Doob said, the main thing is keep them well serviced, keep oil out oh, & check for any cylinder leaks.

Well serviced drums should stop you easily whatever you're hauling.

Give up with Series handbrakes tho'. Sick of sorting the fekin thing after every lane or ford. Gunna be gittin meself an x-eng disc conversion inna bit. ;)

Donkeys ago i built a 88 with a RRV8 etc etc. The highest capability braking system at the time was on the 6cyl 1 ton 109 , so I transfered that spec to the 88 i.e tls 11'' wide shoe front sls11" std width rear and servo with mcyl . Braking was awesome, even pulling RRC on triaxle trailer.
Only negative was you had to brake gently solo in the wet:eek: . HTSH :)

i find that a light application of handbrake while your on the move can get some of the crap out of it again.... i.e. just before you park up just gently pull it on and off again, not when your going flat out down the road...... :D

indeed....

also yer could stick a perkins 4.203 engine in it, brings a whole new meaning to the term "engine breaking", just take yer foot off the accelerator when yer flat out (about 55mph) and you'll be pulling bits of steering wheel out yer teeth for ages!

Wouldn't know that from experience at all then? Tehe.

ah i wish i could get up to those dizzying speeds again, but sadly the poor beasty is confined to a small field with all my familys other non-runners/mot failures/not even bothering to get an mot cos its so rotten vehilces......

one day i'll taste that steering wheel again!

The stage 1 V8 brakes are the best drum brakes available for landy's, they are 11" diameter, twin leading shoe and the shoes are 3" wide. They fit straight onto any series, but are pretty hard to get hold of.

Stage 1 V8 109 and Ser.3 6 cylinder 109 brakes are the same system..they just stopped producing the 6 cylinder engine and fitted a rangey power unit
