Hi all.
First post but have been lurking.
Right, here goes. '97 4.0 SE sometimes loses a little height when left. Now this can be a little bit overnight ( or a lot) or could be a lot in a couple of mins while I pop in the shop.
During normal driving all is normal with ride heights.
Also, anytime the engine is running, the compressor will cut in and out rather a lot for different periods, anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. The intervals between cutting in and out tend to be very short. In case you're wondering, I could clearly hear the comp, coz the rubber feet were shot but now renewed so don't hear anything.
I've been all over with the old spray soapy water and can't find any leaks. I've also rebuilt the compressor and was now wondering if the valve block needs rebuilding.
Hope Ive provided enough info and shall await your accumulated wisdom to shine a light.

You possibly have a leak in a bag that is being covered uncovered depending on how car is sat. More soapy water needed.

Almost certainly a leaking airbag, they don't always show on the soapy water test as the leaks can be where the bag folds under, but if they are original they are almost certainly shot.
The other possibility is a leak in the air lines due to an exhaust blow melting the pipes.

Aaaaah. Hadn't thought of an airbag leak being hidden as it folds. I shall be getting covered in soapy water again 2moz.:(
Thanks for the pointer chaps. Will report back soon.:D

Sorry for the delay. I've now been spraying soapy water like its going out of fashion and rained on for 3 days solid..... no air leaks found ( Bags all look to have been replaced at some point in it's 90,000 mile life. They carry Continental name markings)
All air lines are good.
Now....... when shes parked on level ground the old gal loses no height overnight, even at full stretch. Parked in the road, so there's a sleight tilt introduced because of road camber she tends to drop, mainly at the rear, though not always. This can happen quite quickly instead of overnight.
Am I also worrying unnecessarily about the amount of time the compressor cuts in and out? It appears to run close to it's 15% duty cycle.
Any more thoughts, chaps?

Yes it has a leak you just haven't found it yet.

Hi again. Have now taken the bags out and inspected. All seem almost new with no leaks.
All airlines traced and in good condition no leaks.
I have noticed that when I stop and walk away from the car I can occasionally hear a hiss/phut phut noise from under the bonnet.
Anyway, I'm about to give up with it and wait for a more definitive symptom.

That is the car self leveling and is normal. You have of course read through and done the checks in the Howto at the top of the page.
