HI all.....Ongoing door trouble. Had the Voodoo doorlock issues as I think

Datatek reported on here before. Press fob or use key in drivers door and the

drivers door latch would rise but buzz erraticaly and then settle. Also the door

outstation would make strange noises. Then the other locks would lock and

unlock at will and the tailgate failed to open. I diagnosed bad contact in micro

switches in door lock motor unit. I've since got a good used replacement and

fitted it yesterday. Tailgate now opens but the drivers door has no electrical

functions, ie. door mirror wont operate, window went down and up once and

now wont budge. Just gives the window not set message and the door wont

lock and unlock with the fob button although all other locks behave as they

should when button is pushed. Has anyone had any problems like this before?.

It is so frustrating these electrical issues.

Hmmm, those outstations are fairly bullet-proof so I'd suspect a didgy wire somewhere but you never know, it might be the out-station.

Where are you Landyboots? Someone nearby might have a spare outstation you could borrow for testing.
 
Hi All. Just reporting back on this issue. All sorted now. I stripped out all the panels and checked connector blocks in A post and behind kickplate in footwell. I couldn't find anything wrong so, following the looms, pulled up the inner treadplate and took off the seat box cover. I then lifted the footwell carpet and soundproofing to look at the looms underneath. What happened next shocked me. 2 of the looms run along a trench in the floor and end up at the BECM through 3 plugs, the lower blue plug and 2 upper grey plugs. The looms are clamped to the metal floor with plastic clamps to hold them in place. As I moved them to open the clamps, there was a puff of smoke and then flames. lucky I was wearing gloves because in a panic I put one hand over the fire and with the other hand, I started ripping fuses from the underseat fusebox. When I had it all under control and was sure I had the 3 plugs removed from the BECM I had a look at the damage. There were no fewer than 10 wires melted together and at least 4 of them were fused to the floor. How could land rover do this. It is nothing short of gross negligence on their part. The wiring was clamped tightly to the floor with no adequate insulation an was a ticking time bomb. I would imagine that all P38's are wired the same and I would advise all of you good folk to have a look at yours and make repairs or corrections ASAP. I was worried the BECM might have been damaged from all of this but all seems okay now......PHEW:frusty:

On mine, as well as inadequate insulation, there was a small selection of screws wearing holes in the wires:eek:

I'd imagine that this would be a worse problem in diesels(more vibration)than petrols. I have no doubt that this was a problem that occured over a very long time due to vibration......
