Help !! the tail gate of my 53 TD5 has stopped working - activates on the central locking to lock or after the its reached 10mph(autolock) but then can only be unlocked manually by climbing into the back !!!

I've read the the other threads - ref broken spring - couldn't fing anything and decided to replace the lock mechanism - fitted it today and the new one is just the same. From the haynes manual its 'looks' like if its not the individual locking mechanism then its would effect other doors - but its only the tailgate. I'm now 60 odd quid worse off and still have the problem... any clues ???:confused:

relays looks like thay are common to all locks. thought it may be a cable issue - but any clues there they are terminate to? base of relay? or buried elsewhere in the car ? Thanks!

I dont know where the relay is. On your rear door you shoud have a rubber boot which has wires in it check to see if any of them have perish or broke (because you have movement there wires can only take soo much before they go brittle and snap).

Most of the time its the handle on the outside all stuck and rusted up. What i recomend you do is check the handle above the number plate if its stuck u need to free it off. then lock the vehicle then unlock it.

Hi Guys,
I gather from the forums that a little spring in the rear door lock breaks causing the rear door to "lock" on locking, put fails to unlock on unlocking using the remote device, resulting in a climb thru to the back to pull the inside handle which pops up the Lock button. A site on E Bay sells the little springs, but says they're for pre 1999 model. Mine is a 99 TD5II. Is thje spring compatible or is it a different design. Trying to avoid the mainstealer approach if possible.

Many thanks
