Hi,

as you can see i currently have a H-reg 200tdi and looking to upgrade slightly. i like the disco's and have seen a few that are the ES and XS models. from what i can see, the only difference is that they have extra bits and bobs on body work and interior i.e. wheel arch covers, bits of wood on dash etc.

Are there any performance differences?? is one model better than the other?

i currently tow a horse trailer with my 200tdi, and cant fault it's pulling power, i understand the 300tdi's are a little less gutsy but something can be blanketed off to increase power but are there any major common faults with the 300 engines?

thanks in advance:)

I have a 96 300TDi ES. the 300TDi is very similar to the 200 with a few electronics as well. Power is the same 111BHP. Wether its standard , S, XS or ES the power will be the same. There are some things you can do to improve things. The EGR Valve (do a search on this site) can be remopved as can the cat. Then there are more serious things like bigger intercoollers and playing with the injector pump and putting different air filters in. I had a new exhaust recently and opted to have the non cat one. I also removed the EGR valve. These 2 slight mods have increased performance and economy.

As far as trim levels, the ES is the better equipped, mine has alloys, a/c, full leather, 6 stack CD, power windows/mirrors/sunroofs/ auto dip rear view, side steps to name a few.

Hi,

thanks for that, i thought it was just the trim and a few added extras that were different. i'm going to see a N-reg tomorrow, has all the usual alloys, side-steps etc. lets hope it's a good one - seen a few that have silly things wrong like lifted dash, buttons missing etc, seeing as mine is quite tidy i'm reluctant to buy something in worse condition!!!

cheers

Just make sure it has plenty of service history and check everything works! I was so blown away with mine that I didnt check the diff lock and transfer gears. As it happened it was a relatively cheap fix and I am pleased with it generally. Take your time and dont be rushed, crawl underneath and have a good look everywhere especially boot floors etc. I'm no expert, only owned one for 2 months but its been a learning curve!

will do. i didnt check mine when i bought it 3 years ago and realised on the way home that the passenger window didnt work properly. me and my dad have done bits and bobs on my car over the years so will definately go over it with thoroughly! i will remember to check diff lock and low ratio if it's any good. i assume the boots are known for rusting like the old ones?
