Not running on vegy oil by any chance?
Is it 'spinning over' ok whilst trying to start it?

Mine was a bit of a pig to start earlier this year, but that was discovered to be the starter motor being old and knackered. I thought it was the battery due to sluggish turn over.

All these engines are a bit dodgy to start, but great when they are running!
They start fine if, but ONLY if, all the bits and pieces for cold starting are working.

It sounds like a classic "NO GLOW" to me.

Stage one - put a 12 volt test lamp on a glowplug lead and make sure it lights up when you turn the key to GLOW position and stays lit a decent time.

Read the owner manual - YES or NO - "deck throttle to start her up". Many of these Landy engine injection pumps REQUIRE that your foot is CLEAN OFF the throttle else the COLD START system won't set, and then it's a problem as you describe.

But first make sure the glowplug cables go live.

Does it pump out heaps of white smoke as you crank it over?

will check the voltage in the morning using a meter and also lamp tester, if no light when glow switch position is selected is it the relay:confused:

no when she starts no white smoke:)

CJ
no veggie oil used:p

no starter sounds ok, no spinning :)

Whatever, but fuse, relay, cable, it's traceable, and if you hot wire it for 20 seconds and then try a start you'll soon know if NO GLOW is the problem.

no when she starts no white smoke:)

The white smoke I was thinking about is from the tailpipe while the engine is turning on the starter before it fires up and perhaps for 2 seconds after it fires up.

No white smoke suggests the cold start
excess fuel device may not be setting. The primary cause of this is the throttle being pressed down even a little. Makes sure the tickover speed is NOT being set by a tight throttle cable

Fingers crossed for a NO GLOW outcome.

P'raps i'm just lucky, but my 300 Tdi has just started with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever after sitting in a cold wet windy field for 3 weeks!

Even i was amazed.

Never Happened To Change The Fuel Filter When You Did The Glow Plugs Etc, Had A Vehicle Once Where The Centre Seal In The Filter Had Not Been Fitted, Probably Guy Dropped It On Fitment And This Allowed The Fuel To Drain Back When Left For Any Period And Took Loads Of Cranking To Get It Going. Bought Mine Recently And Seemed To Be Suffering From This As Well, But Not So Bad So Took Filter Off. The Centre Ring Had Been Displaced Slightly Causing Slight Damage, New Filter Solved It.

That is extremely good advice .....
