Please could any members suggest a reputable company to repair or replace my engine. My problems started a fortnight ago, travelling on the M1 the car made a noise similar to dragging a stick along some railings and was followed by a lot of black smoke from the exhaust. Pulling over onto the hard shoulder, turning the ignition off and the engine continuing to run on and build up its own revs led me to having to stall it to stop it. On checking the oil level, it was alarmingly high, 4 inch above maximum fill and it smelt of diesel. I called a breakdown recovery service and was recovered. The technician believed the problem to be the injector seals as fuel was in the oil however, having replaced these its now looking as though I have a cracked cylinder head or possibly a cylinder as I am still getting diesel into the oil - to top it off the engine sounds different and am told this could be a damaged piston. Am thinking my best option is a refurbished engine, can anybody suggest a good company near to West Yorkshire? Thanks for any responses.

Take the head off and have a look, if any head damage a new AMC head is by far and away the best fix

Thanks for your reply MJI. Since my post, I have acquired a replacement engine which will be dropped into my vehicle. As I have a spare engine now, I might open up my poorly one, see what damage there is and have ago at fixing it and selling it on.

You might be better off if you have the post moved , although it might be slightly too late now... As it is in a rarely trod section of the forum, it would be better of in the TD5 engine section or even the Discovery section.

Maybe something to keep in mind for any future posts.

Cheers
