Is it a auto if so make sure you have enough oil in the in the gearbox for the torque converter to work properly.that mite be the trouble your having changing up or even replace the oil it might have been in there from new.

I posted just above - that it was all sorted now. Just required a new filter kit and fluid change.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Anyway's - does that sound like about right economy considering the almost all the driving was at motorway cruising speed, with no town stop / start nonsense??!!

At the risk of turning this into another MPG thread, I drove from the Wirral to the Brecons last weekend, boot full, exped rack on with big tent, 3 up and got about 21.5 mpg very steady A roads, harldy going above 2000rpm or 56mph. :( Not the best, not the worst, I guess.

Finally got this cured (No. 2) - thanks to Gary at Bigbury 4x4 in Canterbury.

I've had loads of suggestions, from downpipe to counter-weights and so on, but the cure was the handbrake unit.

Apparently, there was a recall on Disco TD5's back in the late 90's, where a certain piece was removed from the handbrake unit as it was causing problems - Gary checked this, and found that not only that the handbrake unit was full of gunk, but also required a modicum of adjustment to ensure that the fittings were tight. This explained that when the fault was being replicated (whilst stationary), that it could be relieved by gently pulling up on the handbrake whilst holding it in the offending rev-range.

No parts required, just a bit of adjustment and clearing out of some crap, and totally thrilled that that fecking rattle has finally GONE! Oh, the relief..... what a good LR mechanic - can't recommend him highly enough.

Tell me about it!

It took that long, to find a mechanic that was competent enough to track it down and fix it. I can't believe how awful some of the other mechanics that we've used in the past have been - I'd do a better job running a garage myself, and I know diddly squat about them! (but at least I'd give a monkey's about fixing the fault!).

Do you know which part was removed and did he just tighten up the shoes then?

I have the same problem and its driving me mad!

Hi Twinny

Sorry - don't know which was the offending part that was subject to the LR product recall (other than it being a small part that did virtually nothing within the handbrake unit somewhere) - however I do remember Gary telling me that mine had already been removed, so that this wasn't the specific cause in my instance.

The cause in ours, was that the handbrake unit required "significant" adjustment and the removal of a load of gunk to clean it out a bit. Just a bit of labour and no parts actually required replacing, but as he was an ex-LR mechanic, he knew what to do to fix it. I wouldn't like to have a guess at exactly what he did, but I know it didn't take him long (less than an hour's graft), and the problem has now completely gone, so whatever he did was completely spot on.

I'm sure he wouldn't mind answering the question himself - 01227 731031 is his garage's number if you wanted to give him a shout.
