disco 300tdi clattering on start

as per my previous thread. I have now replaced the alternator however on start there is an almighty clattering. I have checked the tension on the belt and it seems good. it used to make a bit of a clatter on start which lasted about two seconds now it goes on for about ten which is going to wake the neighbours up when I leave at 6am to go to work.

this is what happens when you try an repair/replace things yourself :-(

any ideas?

so the clattering stops after 10 seconds ye? and is niosy as a normal tdi then after

yep, it just has the normal tick over, with a little tapping from the lift pump.
