hi. hope some one can shed some light on a problem my nephew is having with his 300 tdi.it keeps overheating.had headgasket done, disc run ok then gasket went again, this turned out to be blocked hoses, head gasket done again. runs ok.but now overheating again, taken the thermostat out runs ok.put thermostat back overheats, been told its the head gasket again.he says he will buy a new cylinder head and gasket

Have you checked that the thermostat is working correctly i.e opening at the correct temp etc?

Check your earth's too, I had an earth cable come loose and made the temp gauge hit the red despite all being fine engine wise (mine was the battery earth).

lots of possibles here........

is it literally overheating and throwing water out??
if so could be cracked head, was it pressure tested when it was off????
if it's not throwing water out but temp gauge is reading high then it could be airlocks in the coolant.........

When the HG failed did he check the head for warping? Is he loosing coolant? It could be HG related again or there is a SERIOUS blockage in the engine, did he drain the block and flush it all out?

It could also be as basic as an air lock, the cooling system in these has a water circuit that is not too clever; there are high bits (on the heater lines) which can cause airlocks in the system which can cause overheating.
