difficult getting in gears

Hi, I hope someone can give me some advice about a 1983 series 3 petrol I have just purchased. I am new to Landrovers and this will be a project.

Getting it in any gears whilst stationery is very difficult. If I turn the engine off then it goes in and whilst driving gears are not very easy to obtain. I was given the Repair Operation Manual but dont want to remove gearbox unless really necessary, any advise would be appreciated.

Do exactly what slob said, as I have written many lengthy answers for your problem. Sounds like a clutch drag problem... caused by the clutch NOT properly disengaging.

Hint: Check hydraulics first...
