of they landy kind...yer dirty bastids!

Hi

driving along motorway and I started to hear crunchy sounds, when pulling over i lost some drive too

closer inspection looks like there is some oil round transfer box.

Jjust got recovered and started engine, tried 1st gear (seems ok) tried low box 1st,2nd, 3rd(seems ok) but now cant get out of low box, I greenlane so know it normally is easy to change...

does it sound like the transfer box?

is there anything I can check before I have to take it to the garage?

I'm a novice so transfer box is beyond my current DIY skills..

It's an 1995 300tdi 90 defender....

Help please!

Thanks!

Sounds to me like it may have jumped out of high range. Hard to say without hearing the sound etc.

You could drain the oil and see if there are any 'big lumps' that come out, but it does sound like a strip down or a replacement are on the cards.

Sounds like a bearing's gone, heated up and expanded, squeezing the output shaft and created torque/locking up within the box. When it's cooled it's relaxed off and allowed the box to work. Could be transfer box, but could also be gearbox.

I'd say remove both props, remove handbrake drum and see what the 'box output shafts and seals look like at both ends, maybe frop the transfer box and check each bearing/seal and get a look at main box ...

Very hard to say exactly what's wrong, but taking stuff apart now, I think, is your only option!

Might sound a bit off the ball, but I just re-read your first post and it also sounds like it could be a diff failure .. but when you said oil round tbox it put people off .. I think it would still be worth taking props off, but also check diffs etc, lift wheels, turn wheels etc to check diffs.

While the props are off start engine and try gears .. basically you're trying to eliminate stuff till you find the source of the trouble.
