Hi, currently stripping down my 1991 defender to fit a new chassis and bulkhead. Lots of grinder action at present but getting towards lifting the engine out soon.
My plan is to separate the gearbox and lift out engine and gearbox seperately(I intend to put a new clutch in whilst it is accessible).

I can hire an engine hoist/crane with a max lift capacity of 750kg or 450kg on max extension. Will that be enough for a 200tdi engine?

Also, finances dictate that I will have to do some repair work to door skins, any ideas on the thickness of a door skin?

All info appreciated.

If you are fitting new clutch you may as well separate them on the way out rather than lift as one.
Also good time to renew the crank shaft output seal, other items changed when I did mine were gearbox input seal [ was leaking ] clutch release arm and its worn pivot. release bearing, slave cylinder and flexi pipe. All only possible or easyer to do out of the vehicle.
If door skins are bad the frame inside is normally worse.
