Can any one explain to me why Defenders keep leaking oil? I have a Mercedes Sprinter which is coming up for four hundred thousand miles and doesn't leave a drop of oil on the driveway.
My 1990 Defender has just started leaking again. This is the second time I have stripped everything down underneath and replaced all the gaskets etc. Its fine for about six months, then off we go again.
The Transfer box is the main culprit this time. Are there better brands of Gaskets than others?

They don't... many people say this but if it leaks.... FIX IT !!!!!!!!!
Mine doesn't leak a drop.... and I haven't had to fill it in years... Just kidding but its all topped up and doesn't leak at all. If its coming from the gasket that's your fix.... Are you cleaning the surfaces fully ? perhaps some instant gasket and a paper gasket ?

And yes there is a world of difference in quality between gaskets.

Only used good branded ones, ring turner engineering - they will post and will only send quality, don't be tempted by britpart off eBay!

I reckon its old fashioned design, my 110k D3 has very slight oil misting in a couple of places but no leaks, wifes audi is as dry as a bone.
I see a few sprinters at work and they all seem to have oil coming from somewhere.

Mine is dry as a bone too. Can park it anywhere without a drop. Mind you, when you have a leak, the chassis isn't rusty.

Try another brand of gasket. I usually smear a small amount of grease either side of the gasket, has worked so far.
