hi,
the defender 90 (300 TDi) that i'm about to buy has a small problem
going from 5th gear down to 4th, the owner said there is a bit of a
knack to it because a small plastic ring has either broken or got out
of alignment. should i go ahead and buy a replacement part, or wait
till i get a chance to open it up and see what has actually happened?

i found these guys on the net:
http://www.nkrecovery.co.uk/90spares1.html
who have a "FRC7493 GEAR SELECTOR £20.00" but this sounds
expensive from how the owner described it, he estimated 40p. is that
the right part? i haven't got the handbook or workshop manual yet so i
am talking from a complete newbie perspective.

thanks for any advice!

p.s. i found this post below from 2003 which sounds similar..

Two things to check:

At the bottom of the gearstick is a round 'knob' which moves selectors.
On
later models this is made by way of a plastic ring which can wear or
break. In this event gear selection becomes very tricky as the
selectors
aren't always lining up properly. Best solution to this is a
second-hand
gearstick off of an earlier Series Landrover as these had metal knobs
on
the end and so don't wear as much.

Another thing to check is the clutch slave cylinder. If it's engaging
okay
on the move but not when stationary then it could be that the clutch is
dragging. Maybe worn seals in the slave cylinder or old fluid.

Cheers
Gary

er, FRC7493 is a LHD gearstick! £20.00 for that is cheap.....

He probably means:

FRC5859 Gear Lever Yoke Seat - LT77/R380 £1.09 inc VAT
and you'll most likely need:

CR120335L Circlip - Bottom of Gear Lever Yoke - LT77/R380 £0.51 inc VAT

To be honest, if it's such a small job, or so he says, I'd get him to
fix it before you buy it. If it's so simple to fix then why hasn't he
done it already
