hi, i had a slight leak coming from my oil filter (the top were it screws on) so decided to change the oil and put in a new filter, when i took the old one off i made sure it was nice and clean ready for the new one, put a smear of oil around the rubber washer and then tightened it up, but it still leaks from the same place, what can i do next ? any advise
regards jarvo :(

I'd get the filter off and check for any foreign bits stuck around the seal and also make sure nothing else is stuck in there.

When did it start leaking?

ive had a 200tdi fitted, i picked it up sunday, but the lad couldnt change the oil and filter because i was away with it in my car, so it was the old oil and filter and it was leaking then, i changed it hoping to stop the leak and cleaned it as best i could but it dousent seem to have worked

do i need to take filter off again and clean it again ?
cheers jarvo :(

NO you need to find out what's broken?? did you make sure that the old rubber seal came off with the old filter? & did you wipe the new rubber seal with a smear of oil, before fitting. if it's leaking from the housing then there's a problem with the housing.

yes the old rubber came off , and i smeared oil on the new rubber, if i need to replace, what do they call the part im looking for ?

Before you fit it do you remove the seal and lubricate the whole thing with oil?

Are you over tightening it?

Is it the correct size filter?

Once it makes contact give it another 1/4 turn.

I would tighten it up JUST beyond contact, start the engine then go and watch it. Nip it up a little more in small increments watching for an oil leak. With any luck you will get to about your 1/4 turn without any leaks. If it does leak, engine off drop the filter and inspect the sealing surfaces for damge, bits of old seal etc...
