As this was my first job on my landy and it being my first landy the diagnosis has been changing throughout as I learn more and more about my landy.

Jacking the wheels up I managed to confirm it was the rear diff (see previous video) and not the front diff (though the front diff dies have a bit of play in the input bearing).
Managed to get hold of a replacement diff and got it fitted Saturday, one of the UJs on the rear prop was also knakkered so replaced the rear prop UJs while I had the prop off and decided to renew the oil in the front axle at the same time. The hand brake drum was also loose  so gave that a tighten up too (handbrake is OK at the moment but on the job list for later)

The 'orrible sound is now no more :D now onto the rest of the job list...

Here's the old diff I took off -its pretty apparent where the 'orrible noise and crunch was coming from...

The inside of the diff case - some nice chunks sitting there.

and finally, some of the chunks that came out when cleaning out the diff casing (ignore the bits o' gasket)
