Hi all, can you remove a 200tdi engine with the gearbox and transfer box attached? I.e if I also remove the radiator to ease the removal.

I have a leaky transfer box that needs looking at and believe oil coming out of the engine rear crank shaft bearing (have oil coming out of the bell housing wading plug hole). My idea to removal the whole lot is why it’s out I would replace the clutch also and general overhaul of all three items.

It may be easier to take just the transfer box and gearbox.
I think you are meant to take out the seat box, but mine has been modified so you can remove the section above the transmission tunnel.

bit of a ballache to take it all out in one i would say as you'd have to tip the engine and get it quite high up to get it all out plus the weight of it all would be tough going on your own.

Easier to take transfer box and gearbox out as one unit then tackle the engine.

Agreed, no need to remove the engine at all as removing the gearbox / transfer box will give you all the access you require to do the rear crank seal, clutch etc.

The only thing I wonder is what you mean by "general overhaul of all three items"?
If you intend to strip the engine then yes it does need to come out but still there is nothing to be gained by removing them as a single lump.
If however you mean that you are just going to do things like head gasket, cambelt etc then it can remain in situ.

Hi, thanks all for the comments... been also having issues with the starter motor and its a bi*ch to get to being that they exhaust manifold is in the way to get it off. But will take the gearbox and transfer box off first to see what room i get.

If it’s a Disco 200 implant then you’ll probably need to remove the exhaust manifold and jack up the engine to get to the starter.

Thanks for the head ups... any telltale sights to know if it’s a disco engine. I know the defender has been rebuilt in the past as it has a new chassis.

The engine number prefix should identify what the engine was originally fitted to, but the biggest difference is the position of the turbo, which is mounted high up on the Defender engine.
