I am considering buying a 1996 Discovery 1 with 300 TDi. It has the peeling dashboard problem. I have tried a search on this forum, but have not been able to find any info. I have heard that there is a fix for the problem. Is this the case or would I need to replace the dashboard? Any advice or informatin would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a 95 Disco in 1998. I was contacted by the local LR Stealer (Merlins Nottingham) asking if I had a peeling dash as it was a production fault and they were going to replace the dash free of charge, (a sort of recall) but my dash had been replaced under warranty before I bought it. Might be worth trying to contact a dealer to ask if they are still doing it.

Had that problem with my old 94 disco, ordered a dash repair kit cost about £65, took me a couple of hours to fit, can be a bit fiddley in places, helpfill tip us a bit of sharpened metal rod bend it too 45o angel, heat the end and use it for making a hole in the hard plastic part of the dash which the screws fix into.
Once it was all done it looks very tidy, (sorted).

Thank you all for your replies!

Thanks aviator, however, I doubt any South African dealer will still replace the dashboard under warranty so long after the end of production of the Series 1. Although it is always worthwhile to try, and I will do so.

Thanks for the tip Avy. If I buy the vehicle and don't come right with a replacement dashboard I will get the repair kit. Your tip will be useful.

Hoe gaan dit

I have a 96 TDI with a peeling dash. I lifted dash from window edge, removed the foam with had stiffened and could not be re-shaped. I replaced the foam with a 10mm HD soft foam ,using contact adhesive restuck the dash. A bit tricky but it worked.

Regards Ian

Goed dankie, Ian, en self! Net baie besig!

I have unfortunatly been out of touch for a while! Thank you all for your replies. I have bought the Discovery. The dashboard peel doesn't bother me at the moment, and being fairly busy it will wait until I have sufficient time to sort it out. I must still find out if Land Rover South Africa will replace it free of charge, which is highly unlikely! So it will be either Ian's solution or the repair kit.

Regards
John
