I have a 1995 dicovery 300Tdi and it requires a new N/S front CV joint. I understand that there were two different joints made for this particular year, a 10 spline and a 24 spline.

I have spoken to Paddocks and even though I have my chassis no. they seem unsure as to which will fit my motor so it will involve me purchasing both and paying postage for both. Then paying postage for the return of the one I don't want. This will all start to get a little expensive.

Do any of you happen to know which it is most likely to need?

Take it off first and count them,Paddocks can get stuff to me in France in around 3 days, borrow a bike while you are waiting!

Failing that take yeh rubber cap off stub axle/hub and count splines if they are the same on other side of CV that goes in diff yeh sorted:)

Dont forget to get all seals, joints, one shot grease, check bearings, swivel balls/seals etc

Check yeh pads are not loose & clicking in calipers cos mine are and I originaly thought that it was a CV:cool:

Have fun

AFAIK the 24 spline axles were standard on discos from march 1994 - model year 1995 (same time when ABS became available).
If you want to be positively sure, get the front axle serial number:
- it should have a 3 character code (like 32L for example), folowed by a serial number, I guess 5 figures (like 03152) and a suffix letter (A, B or C).
- the serial number is stamped on the top of the left hand axle tube.

If you can get the axle serial number you can tell everything about that axle, including the part #s.
Tell me the axle serial #, if you have ABS or not and the VIN (PM the VIN if you're not comfortable with your VIN in the open) and I'll be able to tell you what you need.

Thanks for the reply Jason. My brakes do actually click in the calipers, but the noise I am getting in the front axle is far harsher and very different to the pads.

By taking the rubber cap off the stub axle and counting the splines, will that save me having to dismantle completely to find out which I need?

The reason I ask is that I am no mechanic and I have just talked a mate into looking at it for me who is, but obviously he can't afford to tie up garage space with my job for 3 days waiting for parts.

cipx2, thanks for the reply. I'll see what I can do about the axle serial no. Unfortunately I have mobility problems so don't find it easy to get under cars so bear with me and I'll see if I can get my mate to oblige.

No worries, take your time. We're in no hurry and neither is the CV joint, it can wait a few more days/weeks no problems. Just go easy on the throttle when sharp turning, specially on full locks.
