hoping to take the 109 on its maiden voyage this weekend its a very standard no overdrive diff convertions or big tyres original 2.25 deisel with 72000 miles what would you guys say is a realitic cruising speed for the beast i would like it to chug along between 45 50 mph or is that wishfull thinking

A 109 2.25 diesel on 750 x16 should be perfectly happy at 45 to 50 , maintaining that speed up hills probably wont be possible.
I hope you have fitted plenty of h/d rubber mats etc to help deaden the noise , as its a bit of a culture shock after driving modern cars.
I used to travel with mine at that speed many years ago, including travels on the continent. with the longrange tanks I had fitted and its average speed and mpg i worked out i could drive nonstop for 24.5 hours .
They will handle about 65 down hill :D

My 2.25 petrol will do 65-70 downhill screaming, but i hardly ever go above 45. In fact mainly it sits anywhere up to 40mph which is comfortable!

A massive difference to my car which, lets say, is at completely the other end of the spectrum!

mine did similar but went bang at the bottom......
me perkins doosil injun will prepel me series 3 along at 50-55 at absolute tops (with overdrive on) yer deaf just with the engine idling so at those speeds yer ears'l bleed!!

I had o/d and cruising wasnt too bad , it was a lot better when I changed the engine to a 4/98 leyland 3.8 L also changed the diffs to 4.1
with o/d cruise was 60-65 up hill with a trailer as well :D

On long journeys used to have a set of headphones that plugged into the eight track ( whats one of those:confused: ):D
