Costly Rear Diff

Hi,
I wonder can anyone give me help please?
My Discovery 3 was making a noise in the back end - a local Land Rover specialist found filings sticking to the rear diff bung when he drained it - they were 'like a Christmas tree'.
The Discovery is covered with a 'Momentum' warranty and the diff has been assessed by an independent assessor.
But
The bottom line is the specialist is charging £1700 to replace the diff
The warranty company will not stand over any of the cost of it because there are no broken bearings etc

Any advice???

Sorry to hear about your issue. Typical warranty company then. How long have you owned it? I would perhaps go down the line of taking it back it where you bought it (assuming it's a garage and wasn't a private sale) before spending any money and go from there.

Was the diff noisy? There are often metal particles on the magnetic drain plug especially if it has not had an oil change for along time.

Hi,
Thanks for the link - I will have a look. I have had the car 11 months but unfortunately the diff is out and it is at a specialists so taking it to the garage where I bought it isn't really an option. Thanks for your reply

What was the problem with the diff? Sounds like you are being rolled over.

Hello the diff wasn't that noisy but there was noise and the specialist thought that it was bad enough for the warranty company to pay for a replacement!!!

You are being taken for a sucker IMO. Specialist thought they were onto a nice little earner at the expense of the warranty company.

I would take the diff to an independent forensic engineer for a professional opinion. It will cost you, but a lot less than the specialist wants. Just the threat of doing this may make your specialist have a change of mind.

I checked with a forensic engineer earlier and he said he would be charging £2500 to look at it!!! I told him I would pass!!!!!!
