Really fed up now. Had a water leak and was convinced that it was the rad so stripped it all down only to find that it was the bottom hose that was leaking. I thought that it was caused by it rubbing on the cowl. Oh how I was wrong.
Put it all back together filled it with coolant and started it, right noise so shut down straight
away. Investigation found that the fan blades are catching the bottom hose. I changed the viscous fan recently so think that the new fan blades are wider than the original.
Really hissed off that I need to drain and remove parts again so I can get at the hose clamp holding the hose to the engine and twist the hose so it is held off the blades. Annoyed to say the least!
