What exactly do you mean by cooked? Severly overheated? No coolant or ran out of oil? Rattle of death could be a simple thing making a lot of noise or a completely clapped out engine, shot mains, cams, big ends etc.

If it was a standard engine then it wouldn't have lipped liners, it's the same rubbish block design no matter if it was a Thor varient. Depending on how much you cooked it by there could of course be all manor of damage, only removing it and stripping it will show where parts have failed. I personally wouldn't rebuild it, I'd replace the block with a top hat linered remanufactured unit as at least a short block, inspect/skim/rebuild the heads or buy a long engine. Reason being is after it's rebuilt there is no guarantee how long the liners will stay put. If one slips it's a trashed engine, it could hold for 5 miles or 50,000, no telling.

Cooked as in extremely hot I suspect that there is/was a small leak allowing air into the coolant as it managed to pressurise and blow the top hose of the rad - remarkably the rad is intact and the spring clip was still on the hose - how that happened I dont know also when it cooked the temp guage didnt move stayed dead centre anyway I think I agree with your conclusions that a rebuild would be a waste of time due to the crap block as for the rattle of death sounds like it is one of the camshafts - it will run just about anyway thank you for confirming that I was thinking down the right lines
