Hi everyone
I have purchased my first 4x4 car ever:confused::confused:
I have a 1997 range rover p38 4.6 v8 petrol
firstly the air suspension is playing up so I have found a reputable garage to do a coil conversion costing me 392 pounds.(goes in tomorrow)
it needs a new alternator apparently an easy job:confused:, most of the electronics in the cockpit are working but drivers side window will not go up or down and also the dash display only half lights up, head liner is sagging, rear tail light is dim, other than the above mentioned problems the engine is sound, automatic transmission is smooth, no overheating, body work is good, underneath is good, no rust etc, has mot till November no advisories,
I have read some very bad reviews:( and some great ones:)
I will be honest I love the way this car looks:cool::cool: and inside it is so comfortable the ride height is great and fuel isn't as bad as I was expecting, but I do not have the funds to get all jobs done at he garage I didn't deliberately go out to buy this car I wanted a 4x4 as im sick of getting stuck in the snow etc and I love how they look, I was offered this car at a cheap price, this is my only car I cannot afford to keep 2, so any advice on fixing the above faults would be very appreciated, and also does anyone know where I can get a hold of a second hand 7 seat conversion kit, I know they exist for this model but I'm having a terrible time trying to find one, i've found new ones but they are out of my budget,
many thanks
:)

You should search about on here before getting your wallet out...

I bet you could fix the air suspension for less than the coil conversion and end up with a FAR superior (and safer) car ;)

hmmm now that made for some interesting reading.....
what to do, what to do ??????
the points about it being unsafe make sense in regards to rolling at high speed if I had turn quickly etc
the problems I have are a leaking rear air bag
and an electrical fault that means it gets stuck in the lowest setting and it has to be reset at garage to rise again, and its bouncing around like a bloody kangaroo

It will be much cheaper the sort the air suspension than convert to coils (a pair of air springs is only just a tad over £100). The P38 wasn't designed to sit on coils.
Put any further posts in the Range Rover section & you will get more specific help, Datatek on here is a wiz with the EAS system & may be able to advise on the fault.:)

Firstly :welcome2: It takes a brave man to take on a P38 in that condition with no experience. I very nearly bought one myself - I also love the way they look.

+1 regarding the air suspension - it's one of the things that makes the P38 great - and with a bit of TLC and regular maintenance, once its sorted its nowhere near the problem child its made out to be. I'd keep it personally.

I looked into the extra rear seats, a company in Scotland does them - rear facing only, Depending on trim levels, that are around £500 supplied, and £800 fitted. Fitting them is not a 5 minute job however, and I would seriously advise against mixing additional seats in the loadspace with springs. You should also advise your insurance that the car is a 7 seater - there are a few threads here on that topic.

You will find this forum a great source of knowledge wisdom & experience, and the members are really helpful.

ATB with your new toy :)
