Yesterday my clutch gave up - the slave dumped its load and the pedal went to the florr. I had bled it successfully a few weeks ago and there was a good pedal but it hasn't lasted (some on here did warn me!)

Any thanks to the RAC guy we bled it up and I got it home. Its booked in for the job as its to big a job for me outside my house without a ramp.

I cannot believe the amount of work needed and the cost but hey ho.

I am having the slave, pressure plate and clutch plate replaced and some guide thing.

The question I have is do I need to change the flywheel? that is big bucks. Why I ask is that I have experienced a shimmy as I accelerate away which then clears but can be felt a little at very high speeds. I have thought it might be a driveshaft but now someone made a suggestion that I should change the flywheel.

UPDATE - I have now ordered the Flywheel as well - this is now a very expensive Freelander!

This vehicle doesnt half cost some money to keep on the road. I think Landrover have cleverly engineered a milage whereby it all falls apart!

I hope you got a good price for the flywheel. Euro car parts do them for £378.00 although at the moment you get 25% off that if you by online which would make it £283.50.

Drat missed that one - I have ordered it now at £339 Inc VAT was the europarts one Inc vat ? I got this one from an eBay shop and will have it tomorrow made by LuK

Today has been an expensive day! Hopefully the guy doing for me will go easy on the labour but I know it takes ages - he's done a few though.

The clutch plate, pressure plate, slave Inc release bearing and guide I got from Famous Four and with 2 rear wheel bearings I need as well cam to £240 Inc vat

I wonder if the dual mass may be causing that shimmy I have on acceleration?

Hey ho!

Hi, Yep that included the vat. It's the LUK one aswell.
Europarts are quite good on most things price wise although I get a better discount by going into my nearest branch. I'm there that often for one or other of our cars that they give me full trade discount nowdays.
I think I now no what you mean by shimmy.....I have a 206 GTI 180 and when first setting off you sometimes get a shudder when releasing the clutch. It's a known fault on them having a slight warp on the dual mass flywheel. When the cars warm or if you use more revs setting off the problem goes away.

Ah well the difference in the whole cost is not too much and to be fair they sent it today ( same day as I ordered) and it is next day delivery so will have it in time for the weekend.

Are the LuK ones ok?

I will check out Europarts in future - not a company I have used, thanks.

Europart discount on clutch and flywheel stuff is 15% not 25% so it's within £10 of what I paid phew I can sleep tonight now ha ha

4.8 hours is the designated time to do a Td4 clutch i think, so anywhere around that times labour rate seems fair.

Though if you've done a few. 3 hours is about all it takes with airtools

Quite right I hadn't seen that the clutch kits only had 15% off:(
Before you go to sleep how about the other bits though?;)........although they show no stock on the slaves at the moment:doh:

I won't do it myself it's too big for me on my own on ramps at home and I am getting to old for heavy work do I have a great local guy who is so busy he is going to do it Saturday and he needs to get it out the same day, ideally early do he gets some weekend time.

I will let you know - it will be very reasonable I am sure. He appreciates being supplied with all new parts as well rather than him getting them.

It's a full working garage so all the tools and diagnostics etc luckily he had a BMW 320 Diesel himself so knows the engine well.

Yep, if you try and remove them selector mechanisms off the top of the box they can be a royal pain in the ass. I always recommend struggling a bit more and removing the gearbox with it attached :) Just imho anyway..

I had a look and I think that Famous Four 4x4 is cheaper for the other bits. Clutch kit is £84 plus vat slave is £55 &vat Inc release bearing and rear wheel bearings are £25 each and £10 for some guide for the release mech.
